THE
AIRPORT Hong Kong International Airport is located on a largely man-made island, 25 kilometres west of Hong Kong Island. It began commercial operations on 6 July 1998 with a single runway and an initial capacity of 35 million passengers and 3 million tonnes of cargo annually. The addition of a second runway a year later and an extension to the passenger terminal have since increased airport capacity. It can now handle 45 aircraft movements an hour and the annual passenger terminal capacity has been increased to 45 million passengers. |
THE
OPERATOR The Airport Authority Hong Kong ("the Authority") which operates the airport, is a statutory body wholly owned by the Hong Kong SAR Government. The Authority's statutory purpose is to provide, operate, develop and maintain Hong Kong's new airport at Check Lap Kok in order to ensure Hong Kong's continuous status as a centre of international and regional aviation. It is also charged with the responsibility of conducting its business in accordance with prudent commercial principles. |
